Sharing the love of Jesus in our Community

Mission Support - Jean Tither

In mid July 2009 Bishop Ridley Church supported me (thank you) as I traveled to Davao City in the Southern Philippines to work with a partner of Oversea Mission Fellowship International, the Malikha Urban Poor Team/Taytayan Development Projects (TDP). I was away six weeks.

I supported the MUPTeam working with street level communities which included the homeless, street kids, street youth and men and women in the sex trade; I also supported two Muslim communities teaching in pre-school and supporting women with their literacy.

It was a very challenging and rewarding stage of my ministry. To step out of my comfort zone and travel to the Philippines was a tremendous experience. I saw God at work in a way that I did not think possible. God showed me how He is at work. . And God has enabled these communities to minister to me. It has been a truly humbling experience. Through the MUPTeam, I have seen God’s love at work in the kids, the youth, the GIST, the MIST and the WIST. I have seen how the team are with them - talking, laughing, crying, listening, relating, loving them. They make these communities feel valued, feel wanted, feel accepted. “I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Isiah 6.8 This was/is my verse for coming here. I felt I was being called and it was me who was doing this. How arrogant of me. The call of God is not a reflection of my desires or my passions but His. It is He who chooses us to use in glorifying His kingdom. What is happening is God at work, it is God who is putting the smile on his children’s faces. And the MUPTeam is allowing God to use them.
